Iona’s Song of the Week - No. 8

On 26 October 1973, a song was released in the UK by a Dutch band that most of us had never heard of. The song rose to number seven on the UK Singles Chart and has become a perennial favourite!

The band started in the Hague in 1961 as the Tornados; however, they soon discovered that a band by this name already existed, so they changed their name. By 1970, after several personnel changes, they had settled into a five-piece outfit and garnered worldwide acclaim on the release of our SotW. However, despite the popularity of this song, it is fair to say the band could be categorised as one-hit wonders, although during 1973-74, both Kiss and Aerosmith were their support acts at different times!

Our chosen song this week has been compared to Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water, and like other songs of the era, Highway Star, Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody, was composed as a ‘suite’ with several distinctively different sections. And so, without any further ado, here is Golden Earring’s Radar Love.
