Iona’s Song of the Week - No. 22

Total Control is an interesting concept and possibly a good idea for a song! As it happens there is a great song by the American band The Motels called just that! Another intersting fact is that, to date, there have been 31 past and present band members!

Anyway, back in 1979 this band from Berkely, California, released their debut album called simply The Motels and I happened upon them and bought the LP and even then I considered the album cover to be ‘different’! What caught my attention from the off was the voice of the singer, Martha Davis and this week’s SoTW caputers her voice in all its glory! The chosen song was a 5:54 long piece of sheer delight (in my opinion) and was track 3 of 5 on side one of the platter. Speaking of the song in 2000, Davis recalled, "When I wrote this my heart had been broken. I was angry, I wrote a thrash punk rock song, then Jeff Jourard came along with this wonderful minimalist chord progression and I laid my thrash lyrics on the new progression."
