Iona’s Song of the Week - No. 20

Once again, we find ourselves delving into the musical archives to pick a SotW, and this one dates back to mid-August 1979 when Led Zeppelin released their 8th and penultimate album, In Through the Out Door. The track chosen closed side one of the original album and is an unusual sound for the band, given its rockabilly beat!

As a side note, the original LP came in a brown paper bag to protect the gatefold sleeve artwork. The sleeve was sepia-coloured, and some years later, a ‘friend’ of mine said, “Do you know that the sleeve changes into colour if you wet it?” As he spoke, he licked his thumb and drew it over the front cover, wiping a shed load off the product's value as he did so!

Anyway the song grew out of the band's pre-production rehearsals, where they warmed up by playing a series of old Elvis and Ricky Nelson covers. Dave Lewis, the author, editor and illustrator who worked extensively with the band, called it a “rockabilly country hoe-down” that "owes much to the state of Texas and the state of a particular female in Texas”!

Ok, so here is our SotW Hot Dog by Led Zeppelin……
