For week number six of 2025, we are heading back twenty-seven years to 1998 when we first encountered a “Madchester” band who were comprised of twins and their mate! This three-piece had met at Wilmslow High School, aged 15, and had gone on to form a band called Sub Sub. However, when their recording studio burnt down, they decided to refocus their musical style and resurfaced as Doves and went on to release six albums between 2000 and 2025, however, the first two albums, namely Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast were the ones that caught our attention. It is also noteworthy that three of the albums released before 2020 reached Number One in the UK Charts.

Lead singer and bassist Jimi Goodwin, guitarist Jez Williams and twin brother Andy Williams comprised this powerhouse group and like other three-piece bands before them, they packed a succinct punch.
The track we have chosen comes from the second LP The Last Broadcast and is the longest track on the album at 6:54 and is placed at Track Three Side One. Their sound is very reminiscent of other, earlier, “Madchester” bands of the time, especially The Stone Roses (formed in 1983) and is definitely grounded in a time and place.
So here is our choice for the week There Goes the Fear from Doves.
Haven't listened to the Doves for ages! Thanks for the reminder, haha. Great choice, by the way.
