The Story Behind The Photo - No. 02

The story behind the photo: having spent the afternoon going up the Cairngorms via the funicular and enjoying a soup, sandwhich and the views we headed down off the mountain and checked into the Glenmore Campsite on the eastern edge of Loch Morlich in the village of Glenmore. Once Iona was set up for the night, we took a walk to the beach at the lochside and ambled through the wonderful old scots pines that form the woodland there. We then found our selves exiting the forest out onto the main road and walking back to the campsite entrance.

Soon after we had started back along the footpath we came across a small shack like structure called the Pine Martin Bar and Restaurant, and as it was late afternoon, we popped in to see if they were serving food that evening. The cheerful lady behind the bar confirmed that they were starting service in about half an hour at 5:00 pm. So we bought a couple of drinks and sat outside in the dying embers of the day and waited for dinner to be served!

Sitting outside gave us an oppertunity to scope out the place and it became apparent that the whole establishment was based on a skiing motife, not surprising given that the Cairngorm Mountains were only 15 minutes up the road! We then moved inside, found a table, ordered our evening meal, and enjoyed the cosy atmosphere and our food.

When we had finished and settled the bill, we walked outside and headed towards the campsite via a small path that led directly into the site and it was then that we came across this fence with the old skis attached. We have no idea how long the fence has been there, but many of the skis did look rather old! We also wondered what stories of “daring-do” on the upper slopes they could tell, if only they could!
