Iona’s August/September ‘24 trip…

Having set off from Glasgow on Tuesday, 20th August, we have been to Moffat, Rugby, The Long Road Festival, Gloucester/Cheltenham, Purton (the fabulous Dora’s Dairy Farm) and are now set up just outside Oxford.

Moffat and Rugby were one-night stop-overs, but great for all that. The festival was superb, despite the weather trying to dampen our spirits, and we caught some great bands, including American Aquarium, The Red Clay Strays, John Baumann and Pokey Lafarge, to name a few. Then came the campsite between Gloucester and Cheltenham, which was fantastic, allowing us to visit both cities and keep our step count going!

Next up was Dora’s Dairy in Purton, just outside Swindon, a haven we discovered last year. Jon and Sarah run the farm. They have Quail, Chickens, Cows, and Pigs (oh and dogs!), but the piece-de-resistance is the raw milk for sale from their small farm kiosk. On the first sip of this nectar, I was instantly transported back to 1964, to Broomhill Primary School, Glasgow, and the morning milk bottle during break time!  Sadly, selling raw milk in Scotland is illegal now, and we can’t even get Jon to post any of it to us for this reason! Maybe one day…..we live in hope!

Also, as it happened, the farm was hosting two food and drink nights (lots of raw milk!), and we got tickets for the Sunday night event. On arrival, we were offered a quail’s Scotch egg, Ox Liver pate, and then a main course of Gammon/shredded Beef Shin/Beef Skirt steak with potatoes and green salad, all from the farm! Delicious. Oh, and bizarrely, perhaps, the cows came by later in the evening and settled down for the night in the adjacent barn in full view of our tables!

We have now moved to Oxford, where we have pitched up at another working farm, and over the next day or two, we will be sampling the delights of the city, so check back for more about our trip soon…..
